El cantante, bajista y guitarrista británico John Wetton, líder del grupoAsia, murió hoy a los 67 años, luego de perder su pelea contra un cáncer de colon que lo había llevado a cancelar algunas giras.
El músico británico falleció mientras dormía, de acuerdo a la información aportada en la página de Facebook de Asia, grupo que lideró junto a Carl Palmer, Geoff Downes, Sam Coulson."Lamentamos informar que el icónico cantante John Wetton falleció esta mañana mientras dormía. Descansa en paz, John", reza el mensaje. Por su parte, Geoff Downes fue el primero en informar su muerte. "Queridos, lamento de ser el encargado de anunciar la triste noticia que mi querido amigo, compañero de banda y co-escritor John Wetton falleció", escribió a través de su cuenta oficial de Twitter. "Con la muerte de mi buen amigo y colaborador musical John Wetton el mundo pierde a otro gigante musical más. John fue una gran persona que creó algunas de las melodías y letras más recordadas en la música popular", aseguró Carl Palmer.
"Como músico, era innovador y atrevido, con una voz que llevó a Asia a lo más alto de las listas de todo el mundo. Para los que lo conocíamos, su valiente batalla contra el cáncer fue una gran inspiración. Echaré de menos su talento, su sentido del humor y su sonrisa contagiosa. Qué te vaya bien, viejo amigo", señaló el baterista .
Naciò el 12 de junio de 1949 en Derbyshire, Inglaterra. Sin embargo, creció en Bournemouth, Dorset. Wetton destacó rápidamente por sus habilidades tanto para sacar un sonido muy personal al bajo como por su capacidad de improvisación (como se evidencia en algunos shows en directo como en el "The Great Deceiver" de King Crimson), aunque sus grabaciones siempre estuvieron pasadas por un tamiz más comercial. Desde el primer momento también tocó la guitarra, el piano o incluso fue compositor.
